If he has an 1980 Sporty he has the hunk-o-junk. From the early 70's to 1981 (I think) Harley was owned by the basketball company (AMF) and they turned out some real crap. Shoddy workmanship, inferior materials, absolutely no quality control, and pure greed almost made Harley extinct. Finally a group of investors (including Malcolm Forbes) bought the bankrupt HD and turned it into a quality company producing quality products.

I am an absolute Harley fan and if given the choice of a HD from the "basketball years" or a "rice burner" from the same era, I'll ride rice.

By the way, the equipment that produced the first "blockhead" engines for HD was designed and built in Germany because at the time there was no company in the U.S. or Canada capable of meeting the design tolerances required. One for our German buddies.
